It had been a long time since Yahoo came up with a New version of its Popular Yahoo Messenger IM client. The users were waiting for it desperately. It was a sign of joy for me when I saw the new Yahoo Messenger Beta 10 available for Download on the official Yahoo website.
This version 10 of Yahoo Messenger has some extra features as compared to earlier Yahoo Messenger 9.
Features (As demonstrated by Yahoo):
Right from the start, you will notice a new language feature. To use yahoo messenger in another language, you can chose it from the menu and sign in. this will change the language of the text on the menu (Menu bar) and other parts of the Interface but still offers you all the same features.

Video Calling:
Video calling is one of the coolest new features introduce in yahoo messenger 10. Now you can make high quality video call with voice to your friends on yahoo messenger 10. For this a New “video call†button is provided on the IM Window.
Once the call is connected, you can adjust the size of the window. you will notice your own Video picture is embedded on screen too. You can move it to another corner, Swap it with your friends Video, Put your pictures side by side, and even hide your picture to get it out of the way. you can also go full screen with your video call.
During the call you can also mute your microphone or your speaker or even put the call on hold. You can also use other features while you are on the Video call such as file transfer, games or photo sharing.
Friend Updates View:
Yahoo messenger 10 makes it even easier to keep up with what your friends are doing. You will notice a new tab on the main window. This is the updates view of your Contacts list. When you are in this tab you will see a list of latest updates from your messenger friends.
Updates are activities which your friends have done on various yahoo websites like uploading pictures to flickr, buzzing up a new story, rating songs on yahoo music and more.
Updates can also come from your friends on non-yahoo websites such as twitter, netflex, lastfm and others.
Chat about Update:
Another handy feature on the IM view is that you are able to IM your friends about their update. For this, you will have to hover on the update and then chose “Instant Messageâ€. If your friend is also on Yahoo Messenger 10, you will see the updates of your friend on the IM conversation Window.
Its a great way to chat with a friend about their latest update. you can also IM any friend from the Updates View, even if they don’t appear in the list of updates. Just use the contact search bar to find them quickly.
More control Over Preferences:
To make sure you are always in control of what’s going on on your Yahoo messenger, yahoo has added some preferences for managing your updates. You can manage it by going to the preferences menu and then select yahoo updates.
From there you can manage which updates you are showing with your friends. Just Click on the link to go to a Webpage, select which updates to show and with whom.
From preference menu you can also control which updates you see in Messenger. Notifications are also given at the bottom of the screen when a new update comes in. you don’t want to see these, you can turn it off by un-checking “show alerts†on the yahoo update preference screen.
Status messages have also gained up some status in the all new Yahoo messenger 10. Now, when you change your status, it will appear on your friend’s updates list if they are online too, so that they can be more aware of those big changes in your life.
Remember, If you want to change the look of your contact list, click on the menu on the contacts tab and select compact list. this menu also lets you change other settings for your contacts list.
